The spindle is the heart of any CNC machining center. When it fails, production stops. Below are the four most common spindle system faults, their root causes, and practical troubleshooting steps you can perform on the shop floor.
1. Spindle Will Not Rotate or Start
Symptom: The spindle does nothing after M03/M04 is commanded, or it starts and stops immediately.
Possible causes:
● Spindle drive (VFD/inverter) alarm or fault
● Spindle enable signal not output from the PLC
● Broken or loose drive belt (belt-driven models)
● Missing phase or burnt winding in the spindle motor
● Emergency stop not released or safety door open
Troubleshooting steps:
1. Check the spindle drive display for alarm codes (OL, OC, OH, etc.).
2. Verify the M03/M04 signal reaches the drive with a multimeter.
3. Open the guard and inspect belt condition and tension.
4. Measure the three-phase resistance of the spindle motor for balance.
5. Confirm all interlocks — E-stop, safety door, air pressure — are normal.
2. Spindle Overheating or Abnormal Noise
Symptom: Spindle temperature rises quickly (above 60°C) during operation, accompanied by a humming or periodic knocking sound.
Possible causes:
● Worn spindle bearings or excessive preload
● Degraded, insufficient, or overfilled lubrication grease
● Imbalanced tool holder or cutting tool
● Uneven belt tension or aged belt
● Failed spindle cooling system (water-cooled models)
Troubleshooting steps:
6. Stop the machine immediately and measure bearing temperatures with an infrared thermometer.
7. Use a vibration analyzer to distinguish poor lubrication (high-frequency) from bearing fatigue (low-frequency impact).
8. Inspect and replace lubrication grease per the manufacturer’s schedule (typically every 2,000–4,000 hours).
9. Clean the spindle taper and verify tool clamping force.
10. For belt-driven spindles, calibrate belt tension with a tension meter.
3. Spindle Orientation Error (M19)
Symptom: When M19 is executed, the spindle does not lock, the angle is offset, or an alarm is triggered.
Possible causes:
● Loose, dirty, or damaged orientation sensor (proximity switch / magnet)
● Faulty spindle encoder or poor encoder cable connection
● Drifted orientation parameters (angle, deceleration position)
● Loose coupling between spindle and encoder
Troubleshooting steps:
11. Check the orientation sensor gap (usually 1–2 mm) and clean the sensing surface.
12. Monitor encoder feedback values on the diagnostic screen for stability.
13. Re-calibrate spindle orientation parameters according to the machine manual.
14. Tighten the encoder coupling set screws.
4. Tool Not Clamped Firmly or Tool Dropping
Symptom: The tool loosens or flies out during machining, or axial play is detected after a tool change.
Possible causes:
● Fatigued or broken drawbar (Belleville spring stack)
● Insufficient air pressure to the unclamp cylinder (normally ≥0.6 MPa)
● Worn or scored spindle taper
● Mismatched or worn pull stud
● Stuck unclamp solenoid valve not fully resetting
Troubleshooting steps:
15. Measure spindle drawbar force with a force gauge (typically 12–20 kN, model-dependent).
16. Check air supply pressure and unclamp cylinder stroke.
17. Clean the spindle taper and check contact rate with a standard mandrel (should be ≥85%).
18. Confirm the pull stud standard (MAS BT / CAT / ISO / HSK) matches the tool holder.
19. Verify the unclamp solenoid valve resets properly.
Quick Reference Table
| Fault | First Check | Common Root Cause |
| Spindle not rotating | Drive alarm, M03 signal, belt | VFD fault, broken belt, no enable signal |
| Overheating / noise | Bearing temp, lubrication, balance | Bearing wear, degraded grease, unbalanced holder |
| M19 orientation error | Sensor gap, encoder feedback | Loose sensor, drifted parameters |
| Tool dropping | Drawbar force, air pressure, pull stud | Fatigued springs, low air pressure, wrong pull stud |
Preventive Maintenance Tips
Daily: Clean the spindle taper and check tool clamping.
Weekly: Inspect belt tension and listen for unusual noise.
Monthly: Verify spindle runout (should be ≤0.005 mm) and orientation accuracy.
Annually: Replace spindle bearing grease and perform a full precision check.
